Turpentine oil

Description of the plant:
Pine trees are found in forests on the steep, and rocky terrain of the East-West Central Hilly region of Nepal around an altitude of 600 to 1,680 m. This evergreen plant grows 30 to 45 m. tall. Its flowers bloom between the month of mid-January to June, and the fruiting season falls between August and December. Resin is extracted from these pine trees, which is used to produce industrial chemicals such as turpentine oil and rosin. Resin is also known as oleoresin, gum turpentine, and turpentine balsam.
Processing Method:
Pine’s resin can be collected from March to November. The resins collected from the fields are first melted in the steam. Contaminants like wood pieces, leaf litter, and soil-sand are removed from the molten resin. Then, the thoroughly cleansed resin’s (100 kg) are processed through steam distillation to produce turpentine oil (20 to 25 kg).
Properties of Turpentine Oil:
Turpentine Oil is a clear liquid, which looks like pure water. Its scent is described as a peculiar warm-balsamic with refreshing odor.
Uses:
Turpentine Oil is widely used as a solvent in the production of paints, varnishes, and boot polishes. It is used in the manufacture of medicines (ointments, liniments, lotions), perfumes, synthetic camphor, pine oil, pesticides, and other products.

बिरुवाको वर्णन:
नेपालको पूर्व–पश्चिम मध्य पहाडी क्षेत्र (६०० – १,६८० मि.) को भिरालो पत्थरिलो जमिनमा जङ्गलका रूपमा सल्लाको रूख फैलिएको पाइन्छ । सधैँ हरियो देखिने यो वनस्पति ३० देखि ४५ मि. सम्मको अग्लो रूख हुन्छ । फूल मध्थ माघदेखि जेठसम्म फुल्दछ । फल लाग्ने समय भदौदेखि मंसिरसम्म हो । सल्लाबाट खोटो (resin) निस्कन्छ । खोटोलाई oleo-resin वा gum turpentine वा turpentine balsam पनि भनिन्छ । खोटोबाट औद्योगिक रसायनहरू तार्पिनको तेल (turpentine oil) र रोजिन (rosin) उत्पादन गरिन्छ ।
प्रशोधन विधिः
सल्लाको खोटो सङ्कलन चैत्रदेखि कार्तिकसम्म गर्न सकिन्छ । फिल्डमा सङ्कलन गरिएको खोटोलाई सर्वप्रथम बाफमा पगाल्नुपर्दछ । पग्लिएको खोटोबाट काठका चोइटा, पातपतिङ्गर र माटो–बालुवा वा अन्य दूषित पदार्थ छान्नुपर्दछ । यसरी सफा पारिएको खोटो (१०० कि.ग्रा.) लाई steam distillation प्रशोधन प्रविधिद्वारा तार्पिनको तेल (२० देखि २५ कि. ग्रा.) उत्पादन गर्न सकिन्छ ।
तार्पिनको तेलका गुणहरू:
तेल शुद्ध पानीजस्तो कञ्चन तरल पदार्थ हो । यसको बास्नालाई peculiar warm-balsamic, refreshing odor भनी वर्णन गरिएको छ ।
उपयोगिताः
रङ, बार्निस र बुटपोलिसको उत्पादनमा तार्पिनको तेल घोलकका रूपमा अत्याधिक प्रयोग हुन्छ । यो तेल औषधि (ointments, liniments, lotions), अत्तर, कृतिम कपुर, pine oil , रोगनाशक तथा कीटनाशक औषधिहरू, र वस्तुहरूको निर्माणमा प्रयोग हुन्छ ।
