Calamus Oil

Botanical name: Acorus calamus L.
Family: Acoraceae

Description of the plant:

Bojo is a plant that grows in the wetlands (temperate regions) of Nepal between the altitudes of 500 and 2,000 m. Bojo plant grows on the banks of ditches and ponds or in wet ditches or swamps. Its sword-shaped leaves grow between 15 cm. to 1m. in length and up to 2.5 cm in width. The tip of the leaf is sharp. Its rhizomes are 2cm in diameter and 20 cm long and are often found buried in mud. The upper surface of the rhizome is covered with a fine awn. It is fragrant, bitter, and spicy. Bojo is also known as Sweet Flag in English.

Processing Method:

Calamus Oil is produced by using Steam Distillation. During this process, hot steam is sent to the distillation still, which consists of dry Bojo or Calamus dust. This dust should be compressed properly during this process. After distillation of Bojo or Calamus dust for 3 hours, Calamus Oil is produced.

Properties of Wintergreen Oil:

Calamus Oil is yellow or brown in color with slightly thick and viscous liquid. The smell of Calamus Oil is warm, woody-spicy and pleasant odor with increasingly sweet after notes and great tenacity.

Uses:

Calamus oil is used for making oils, soaps, detergents, creams, lotions, and perfumes fragrant. Bojo oil is also used to flavor small amounts of bakery foods, spices and alcohol.

बिरुवाको वर्णन:

बोझो नेपालको शीतोष्ण (temperate) प्रदेशको (उचाइ ५०० देखि २,००० मि.) सिमसार जमिनमा उम्रिने बिरुवा हो। खोल्सो र पोखरीको किनारामा वा ओसिलो खोचमा वा दलदल परेको ठाउँमा यो बिरुवा सप्रिएको पाइन्छ। तरबार आकारको यसको पात १५ से.मि. देखि १ मि. सम्म लामो र करिब २.५ से.मि. चौडा हुन्छ। पातको टुप्पो तिखो हुन्छ। जमिनमुनिको यसको भाग राइजोम (rhizome) २ से.मि. व्यास भएको २० से.मि. लामो हुन्छ। राइजोम अक्सर हिलोमा गाडिएको अवस्थामा भेटिन्छ। राइजोमको माथिल्लो सतहमा मसिनो झुस हुन्छ। यो सुगन्धित, तीतो र पीरो हुन्छ। बोझो जेठ–असारमा फ़ुल्दछ। यसलाई अङ्ग्रेजिम sweet flag भनिन्छ।

प्रशोधन विधिः

सुकेको बोझोको खस्रो धूलो राखिएको भाँडा (distillation still) मा तातो बाफ (live steam) पठाएर steam distillation प्रक्रियाद्वारा तेल उत्पादन गर्न सकिन्छ। खस्रो धूलोलाई खाँदी–खाँदी राख्नुपर्दछ। बोझोको धूलोलाई ३ घन्टा distillation गरेपछि तेल उत्पादन हुन्छ।

बोझोको तेलका गुणहरु:

तेल पहेंलो रङको वा खैरो, केहि बाक्लो, लेसाइलो तरल पदार्थ हुन्छ। तेलको बास्ना warm woody-spicy and pleasant odor with increasingly sweet after notes and great tenacity भनी वर्णन गरिएको छ।

उपयोगिताः

तेल, साबनु , डिटरजेन्ट, क्रिम, लोसन र अत्तर उत्पादनमा ती वस्तुहरु सुगन्धित बनाउन प्रयोग गरिन्छ। थोरै मात्रामा बेकरी (bakery) खाद्य पदार्थ, मसला र मदिरा सुगन्धित बनाउन पनि यो तेल प्रयोग गरिन्छ।
